Birthday Goings On

Last night, my dear daughter had a sleepover for her 13th birthday. Since the double digit ages, we have scaled down significantly on the birthday party scene. I usually started planning the theme, etc. a few weeks in advance. Figuring out what the cake would look like was a family event. And, of course, scouring the stores for sales on paper goods was the makings of a good weekend. The one time we did the McDonald's thing, it was almost depressing. We had kids running everywhere. She ended up going to find and inform each kid when she opened their gift and few of them were interested enough to leave the playground to watch. I wasn't real sure what to do with myself if I didn't run around in a frenzy during the whole time. So we stuck to our versions which, if not as well attended, were still more fun. This year as well as last she was allowed to invite 3 or 4 people over for a sleepover. Only one was able to stay this year but I think they both enjoyed themselves.

I have figured out that for parental unit survival during a sleepover, the key is to have sufficient food and movies to last them into the wee hours (translated 2 or 3 am). You have to have a Thanksgiving mindset. Fill 'em up and then plant their overstuffed bodies in front of the television with something that will cause them to want to pass out. Sound familiar? Turkey and football anyone? That'll sure do it for me. Unless its the Razorbacks. I can actually get into one of their games every now and then.

Of course, I'm exaggerating a little. There is always going to be a little running around. And last year, with several pre-teen girls around the table chatting, I had faint glimmers of their future hen house gossip sessions. But food is still an important part of the whole thing. Gee, I bet that's a shock, huh? Me and eating? I still make a cake. It's just smaller. This year, we found the cutest sleepover cake.

There are supposed to be lumps under the blanket where their bodies are but I didn't have any Twinkies and we didn't decide on this one until too late to add them to my shopping list. Like they'd actually still be here when I did the cake even if I did buy some especially for it. But it tasted pretty good even without them. And I am now the mother of a teenager.

Ugh. If that doesn't call for Twinkies, I don't know what does.

Are you supposed to put icing on the actual Twinkies? (Eww!) Maybe it was better how you did it...

Very cute though. Happy Birthday, Sarah!
