Trash

Chick and I went to a Ladies Retreat two weekends ago. When we came home, we decided to share a couple of the things we learned with Rugrat and Hubby.

New card games.

While Rugrat liked playing "9 Hole Golf," she really enjoyed learning "Trash." I have no idea why they call it that. It took her no time to catch on and she has asked to play it several times since.

Six Flags over Texas

Shortly before our anniversary, Hubby came across a deal on season passes at Six Flags. So, for our anniversary, he and I made a trip to go check it out.

On our way down, he planned a few other stops.

One was our first visit to an IKEA. I know, we are certainly the wild ones, aren't we.

Then, we headed on to Six Flags. It was an awful lot like when we were dating again.

At least it felt that way -- like we were on a date at the state fair or something except, you know, we went back to the same hotel room.

Rugrat has a thing about the statue of liberty so we took this picture for her.

It was their annual Halloween thing so they had a lot of that kind of stuff going on.

We had so much fun that we decided to take the kids down. So off we went again the weekend before Halloween.

Chick's favorite ride is the swings, always and forever.

Rugrat found her hero in one of the stores. Her love of Wonder Woman is solely the product of the old television series that MeTV shows every Saturday evening.

They both thought the Batmobile was pretty cool though.

Guess who turned out to be a roller coaster fiend.

This one especially (the Judge Roy or something like that) was her favorite. She asked to go on it more than once.

We had a great time and actually had planned to go again for their Christmas thing but our time was gone before we could.

I'm sure we'll be making use of them again in the near future though.

Mildly Disturbing

Found this the other day. What has Rugrat done to her poor Ken doll? Isn't he tortured enough with that terrible haircut? And now this?

I can't decide if this is funny or weird. How 'bout you?

Happy Valentine's Day!

Rugrat will get her first real Valentine's party today. Well, of a sort. I signed her up on the learning coach group to participate in a "Snail Mail Valentine's Card Exchange." She sent out her valentines and does not realize it, but has been receiving them from other kids. I've been collecting them. She made a mailbox and I am going to fill it with all of them for her to open after I get back from work around 1:00.

I also plan to have some heart shaped sugar cookies for her to decorate. And some things to color and cut out. So even though it won't be a party like at a brick and mortar school, I think she'll enjoy herself very much. And she'll probably end up with more Valentines than she would have gotten there anyway!

Wii Rebirth

P.E. is one of the things we have had a hard time with. We've had rain at times so we couldn't really do things outside. And on days I work, it's really hard to fit in that time because I'm so focused on staying on track with the lessons we need to do that it's rather late when we get to it.

We've been using various things -- stretching exercises for kids, yoga for kids, exercise videos for kids on Youtube, etc. -- from the internet or magazines that I find on those days.

The other day, we brought our Wii downstairs to set up in the living room thinking to use the Wii Fit on some of those days. Chick and I played around on it some with the sports game once it was set up -- wanting to make sure it was all working with no problem.

We had both forgotten though how much fun it is. And we got on it several times more that week. It hooked us again.

Then Rugrat discovered it. And, boy, does she like it.

Her favorite is the bowling (which she often scores better than any of us on -- still haven't figured out how she gets all those strikes).

After Chick played baseball, she had to try that one too. She's not too great on that one. I'm not sure she has the timing yet to hit the ball and the pitching begins to bore her some.

When we played it quite a bit after buying it, we would do the boxing to work up a sweat. It was a little light workout for us to some degree and we thought maybe she could use that one for P.E. occasionally. So we let her give it a try too.

She has only lost two matches so far of several. And she can deliver quite the knock out punch.

I'm thinking she may really enjoy the Wii Fit once we get it going for her. It will probably be quite a fun little break for her in her school day.

Until then, I'm enjoying watching her play almost as much as she is enjoying playing it.

Uh, huh. That sounds about right.

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday

My cake balls for our Ladies Night Chocolatefest on Monday. Cake balls are ridiculously easy to make and really good.

I was shooting for mine to look like a gigantic bowl of Dippin' Dots. Unfortunately, I don't know that it worked very well. Never buy an unknown brand of dipping chocolate for the first time when making something for others and pressed for time.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way Back to the Table.

A few weeks ago, we hit our local Steak 'n Shake for dinner after home group on a Sunday. Chick was out gallivanting with the girls of the youth group and had her dinner taken care of so she didn't join us.

Steak 'n Shake is one of the few places we regularly visit. In addition to the fact that we like their simple menu and good service, they constantly are putting coupons out and having specials. So Hubby is a fan and the rest of us enjoy it too.

We had a different experience this time though. They were slightly busier than usual when we got there so the manager was a little brusque as he seated us. We waved it off for the most part but then discovered that the table we had been seated at was smallish. In fact, we could barely handle it.

I am claustrophobic. I always have been. I still have a very distinct memory of having to get out of one of those tunnel playground toys that all the kids were lining up inside of so I could sit on the end. I can still remember the panic that set in when two other kids got on the side of me and started blocking the exit. While I can handle things like elevators all right, I do not handle feeling trapped at all well. I think the reason I can deal with elevators and such is because I am pragmatic enough to recognize that it is only going to last a few minutes.

On the other hand, sitting to eat a meal with a table edge 2 inches from my chest is not something I can handle well. And it wasn't as if Hubby was hogging all the room. He only had about 2 inches as well. We made it through but we won't be sitting at that table again. (The situation was more aggravating because he had seated a couple at the same time who sat on the same side of a huge booth.)

So there we sat, dealing with it, and not real impressed with the busy waitress who was somewhat ignoring us as well. It was definitely a different experience than we were used to.

And for the first time, it took FOREVER to get our food. I don't know what they were doing back there or why but we, including Rugrat, had decided we weren't getting fed that night. By the time we left, I think Hubby pointed out that we had been there an hour and a half which never happens.

And, then, it finally arrived.

Without silverware or napkins.

We can make it without silverware (it was all sandwiches and fries). We can't make it without napkins. So Hubby decided to go get some rather than attempting to catch the waitress' attention for 15 minutes.

He went to the register and requested them. The counter is an 'L' shaped thing. At the corner of the 'L' is a small display of products for sale and the register sits right next to it on the short part of the 'L.' As Hubby turned away from the register with a hand full of napkins, here came a server with a tray full of chicken strips, fries, and drinks around the corner. He was moving very fast -- I assume because of the way all the food was taking so long to get done -- and he never saw Hubby there thanks to the product display.

Soda and food went everywhere. All eyes turned to them.

Hubby apologized profusely as did the waiter. And then they both made strategic retreats. Another employee appeared and began cleaning it up as Hubby returned to our table with a distinctly pink tint.

Our waitress finally woke up and stopped at our table on her way to someone else's to check that he was okay. As she walked away, I tried to assure Hubby that it probably happens a lot more than we think.

My assurances were negated, though, by Dude's comment to Rugrat: "Hurry up and eat, kid. We gotta leave before the police get here."

The waiter came over later to make sure we were all good. His attitude was so wonderful. He was laughing about it and joking. He never got angry or upset. It definitely put Hubby at ease.

Not so at ease that he would go pay the check. I had to do that. He refused to go near the register again that quickly.

And he checked when we left to make sure I wanted him to drive.

It will probably be a few more weeks before we go back. I'm not sure he's gotten over it yet. When we do, I have the distinct feeling we'll be asking to sit on the other side of the room too.

Passing It Down

Once upon a time, when Chick was about 2 or 3 years old, Granny and I were with her in JCPenney's in Little Rock, Arkansas. Christmas was coming up and Granny saw a shirt that she insisted she MUST buy.

It said, "Who needs Santa? I've got Grandma!" And buy it she did.

That little size 3T shirt has now officially been worn by all three of our children. Doing the math, it would be around 15 years old. It's still in good shape too. Who knows? Maybe their children will pass it around too.

There is another little item in our household that is like that. I recently lamented that we no longer had it so Rugrat could play it then Dude found it while cleaning up the desk he uses for school.

It is this game:

My Disney Kitchen. It is just a little CD-Rom game that lets you run around Minnie's kitchen doing things like making cakes, bacon, eggs, pancakes, emptying the fridge, moving around the dishes, etc.

We got it for Chick when she was fairly young -- maybe 6 -- and then Dude played it for a while too and enjoyed it.

Now Rugrat has discovered it.

I often hear at some point during the day -- "I play my game??"

And she's figuring it out a little at a time.

Initially, when we got it, it would pretty much take over the computer. Now, I don't even think the computer we have, even though it's actually pretty old for most now, labors over running it. Our technologies have come a long way. Which makes this sweet little game even better in my opinion.

I have to wonder what else will be passed down through all three of them. Somehow, I don't think the Cobalt will make it. But you never know.

Monday's Menu

I was making more chocolate syrup (for making chocolate milk with) up the other day and it occurred to me that I had not tried making other flavored syrups before. So I looked up one that I had wished for occasionally.

You see, when I make yogurt, it turns out beautifully -- if it's plain. When I try to make vanilla, our flavor of choice, it just won't set up right. I don't know if its the vanilla or the little bit of sugar I have to add but it just doesn't gel like it is supposed to. It occurred to me to try getting some vanilla flavored milk to use but I haven't yet.

However, I did find this recipe for vanilla syrup. I haven't tried it yet with making yogurt but Hubby has enjoyed some vanilla diet Pepsi's lately thanks to it. Many of the people who commented on the recipe mentioned adding it to their coffee and latte's too.

So I'm thinking it may work well for making vanilla milk as well.

Regardless, this is a fun addition to your recipe stash -- if for no other reason than the next time you've got a craving for a vanilla drink.

Vanilla Syrup

2 cups water
2 cups brown sugar (regular granulated works fine too)
2 Tablespoons vanilla

Bring water and sugar to a boil. Boil about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Allow to cool. Store in refrigerator up to 2 weeks.

Happy Birthday...

to my dear, sweet Hubby! He's hoping his best birthday gift will be that his choice of president wins. Guess we'll wait and see on that one.

If he doesn't get that gift, maybe the chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting (that are in the works) will comfort him.

Spooktacular

Can I say just one more time how much I love our little town?

On Saturday night, our town center hosted it's Spooktacular. Kids can come in costume, play games, and do a little trick or treating at all the tables.

Rugrat was absolutely stoked to wear her costume. Apparently, the kids weren't the only ones participating in the costume thing either. ~ahem~

Hubby and I stuck with jeans and a tee.

A Visit to the Pumpkin Patch

A couple of weeks ago, Hubby purchased a Groupon for a trip to the Pumpkin Patch. Besides getting in for $4.00 each, we figured it would make a fun excursion for us all. And we decided on Saturday to take advantage of it.

"Pumpkin Patches" rose in popularity shortly after Chick outgrew them really and so this was a fairly new experience for us. The only time I can ever remember going to any pumpkin patch type place is with a birthday party that Chick went to. So, I believe, of all of us, this was the first time for Hubby and Rugrat and only the second time for Chick and I.

Dude was camping out with Scouts so he didn't get to go with us (but he wasn't exactly pumped to go anyway).

Chester's had a petting zoo but not many of the animals were interested in our $1 cup of food since breakfast had been shortly before we got there.

This llama, though, decided he would bite the bullet and have a little.

While Rugrat had a horseback 'sit' shortly after joining our family at my cousin's house, this was her first official pony ride.

She kept assuring herself that "mama gotcha" but other than that had fun.

She seemed to really enjoy it and kept asking to go again. Unfortunately, there was only one per person (if the person was 75 lbs. or less) and we couldn't give her ours either.

I told her pony rides were fairly easy to come by at most carnivals and such so she would get to ride again.

We checked out a few other things, then hit the line for the hayride. While we were waiting, he shot off the 'pumpkin cannon,' a long (obviously homemade) pipe through which he shot a smallish pumpkin. And everyone cheered when it smashed to bits in one of the fields beyond the pond he shot it over.

The hayride took you to a 'corn' maze which Hubby decided was actually bamboo :)

It then ended at a little wooden maze that led to a giant slide and waiting area for the hayride going back.

Rugrat went down the slide once by herself then begged to go again with one of us. Guess who it was.

Chick did her best to get a picture of us coming down.

The slide started slow for about 12 inches and then sped up incredibly fast. I ended up on my bohonkus in the dirt despite the landing pad. And pretty much everyone else who went down it (kid or adult) did the same.

We made it back and decided it was time to do some pumpkin picking. So after this outlandish photo op...

we chose our pumpkin each.

and headed for a lunch at Chik-Fil-A (again with coupons) and then a nap at home.

Mine was a little -- ahem -- longer than Rugrat's.
