Ye Olde Medieval Fair

On Sunday, after morning worship, we decided to check out the Medieval Fair in Norman. We had initially planned to go on Saturday but the Chick was so disappointed to miss it because she would still be gone on her youth group trip that we waited until she got back.

Normally this is a picture of what might occur on the way home. But this was on the way there.

The Dude had attended a Scout event where they all spent the night (and consequently got no sleep) in the Science Museum. It sounded cool but he was still pretty tired -- even with a short nap after he got home that morning. The Rugrat on the other hand was missing her nap to go to the fair. And, well, Mom just thought it made for a sweet picture (as well as potential future blackmail material).

The fair was mostly vendors but it was still pretty cool.

There were a couple of castle type structures strewn about.

They had pony rides -- the ones where they go in a circle -- which included llamas and steer. And if you wanted something taller, you could do the camel ride or elephant ride. They even had war horse rides in case a pony was too tame.

They had some jousting exhibitions, a sword fighting exhibition, even a birds of prey exhibition (we didn't see that one although we did get to see them at their tent). They had a forge going and various other kinds of things. There were lots of 'props' everywhere.

And there were people everywhere in costume. We saw knights, peasant folk, gypsies, friars and the like every place we went. There were even some magic folk walking about.

It was a lot of fun. Certainly different.

If the wind hadn't been quite so fierce, I think I would have enjoyed it more. Everything here is so dry that the wind just blew it around constantly. The Rugrat got carried a lot because it got her off the ground where it was swirling about the worst. When we got back into the car, I wiped my lips off on the collar of my shirt and found that it left a brown spot. I was wearing chapstick so I'm pretty sure that wasn't makeup.

Even so, I could probably be talked into going again. There is supposed to be another one just slightly farther away next month that is bigger. I'm thinking it might be worth checking into. And maybe that one would have some medieval food vendors too. There's something that's just wrong about buying frozen lemonade and corn dogs from a guy dressed like Robin Hood.
