Sewing Stash Clean Out

A few months ago, I got fed up with never being able to find anything in my sewing area. Since I had already decided to change out a shelf unit in Rugrat's room to make it a little more workable for her, I thought I might plan how to do the same for me.

Boom. I came across a very large sturdy shelf in Goodwill one day and got it on the cheap. With the older kids' help, I got it in the house and eventually up to her room (Hubby was out of town). The shelf it replaced was one of those wire type box things.

And after a little moving around and replacing here and there, she finally had two much more workable shelves in her room. And I had a wire shelf thingy that I was desperately hoping I could use instead.

My biggest problem when I wanted to sew something was usually that I couldn't see the fabric I had to choose from. I have my own bits and pieces and have had several friends pass along their unused stash to me as well. So I had plenty but I couldn't really see it all to choose from. I had an idea of how to fix that though. Off to Dollar Tree I went.

I found these wide flat baskets there that worked perfectly to place my fabrics in. Because they are made of plastic, I can slide them in and out almost like a drawer. I was happy, happy. And, in the months since, I can honestly say that they work like I wanted.

As you can see they are still a little bulge - y, but I worked on that some afterwards.

My next problem was that all my patterns were in fabric bins. They were the kind of bins that you buy flat and unfold. Whenever I wanted to search for a pattern, I would have to 2 hand the bin to get it out without dumping everything. So, while I was at Dollar Tree anyway, I looked for some plastic ones that were a little taller and more square. Might as well take care of it all at once right?

  I found these..

which are working perfectly. And do you see that lovely stuff around them. That's called SPACE, never before seen in those parts.

While I was transferring them over, I also culled some I knew I wouldn't need again (like the toddler sized ones -- probably don't need those for my 11 year old) and donated them.

When I was done, I couldn't wait to start sewing.

So I did. After all, what better way to help out with that whole bulging fabric bin!
