O Christmas Tree

O Christmas tree that will never rot
Sitting safe and snug inside your pot
You are not the tree I thought
Would be sitting in your spot.

A 9-footer I had bought
Last year is what I thought
Would be sitting in your spot
Not you, all safe and snug inside your pot.

The urge to get it out I fought
Knowing all the while I could not
While waiting for the house to be bought.
I wanted so to fill that spot.

So another year it will get its shot
To stand so regal in that spot.
And next year you will not
Get to sit in that spot
Safe and snug inside your pot.

You may find though that I was not
Quite the owner you had sought.
My plants and flowers, ask the lot.
A green thumb I have not.
You're not so safe and snug inside your pot.
