Monday's Meal

These are a good way to put some "Wow factor" into plain old spaghetti or a frozen lasagna or pizza. They were so good the first time I made them, we ended up making them several times that week.

These were also requested by our congregation at our 'going away' potluck in San Diego. The change to an electric oven when we moved to South Carolina was disappointing even though they are still very good. The best thing about them is how fast they are to make for a fresh bread.

I imagine you could change toppings as well. Poppy or sesame seeds, even cinnamon and sugar would be worth trying. We've just never made it past the yummy garlic ones.

Quick Breadsticks

1 package or 2 1/4 teaspoons yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 Tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter or margarine
garlic salt/powder
parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Dissolve yeast in warm water in a small bowl. Combine flour, sugar and salt in medium bowl. Add yeast; mix well. Knead dough on floured surface until smooth and elastic. Let rise 10 minutes. In the meantime, place butter or margarine on a pan with sides and allow to melt slowly in preheating oven. Roll dough into a large rectangle. Cut into 1-inch strips (a pizza cutter works wonderfully for this). Roll strips in melted butter and place side by side on baking sheet. Sprinkle with garlic salt/powder and parmesan cheese. Let rise about 30 minutes. Bake for 30 minutes or until done.
