Monday's Menu

We gave these a try last week and they were pretty darn good.

Hamburger Steak with Gravy

2 slices bread (to be turned into crumbs -- I used wheat germ instead)
1 lb. ground round
1 egg
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper

OR
2 Tablespoons oil
2-3 Tablespoons flour
2 cups chicken or beef broth

1 onion, chopped
1 8 oz. pkg sliced fresh mushrooms (I left these out)

Mix together bread crumbs, ground round, egg, garlic, salt and pepper. Shape into 4 patties.

Make gravy. If not using a packet, heat oil in saucepan. Whisk in flour until it makes a thick paste. Slowly blend in broth a small amount at a time allowing it to thicken to desired consistency. Salt and pepper to taste.

Cook patties in hot skillet for about 2 minutes, just until browned on each side. Remove from skillet.

Add mushrooms and onions to skillet. Cook until tender. Set patties on top of onions. Pour gravy over patties. Cover. Reduce heat to low and simmer 8 to 10 minutes.
